About Dr. A.K. Banerji

Dr. A.K. Banerji, a legend in the field of Neurosurgery in India, has over 55+ years of experience.
He is credited with establishing micro neurosurgery in India, contributing to the development of various neurosurgical sub-specialties, and standardizing neurosurgical training and evaluation in the country.
He systematically developed peripheral nerve surgery, aneurysm surgery, transphenoidal surgery, and surgery for pineal region tumors, among other pioneering interventions.
After completing his MBBS from the University of Lucknow in 1957, he also achieved an MS in General Surgery from the University of Lucknow in 1961 and an MS in Neurosurgery from the University of Madras in 1964.
Dr. Banerji started working at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1965 and played a key role in creating the Neurosurgery Department from scratch.
He is a very accomplished professional, having been granted the title of Emeritus Professor at AIIMS, Delhi, in recognition of his contributions and commitment to the field of Neurosurgery.
After his successful tenure at AIIMS, he established Vidyasagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMHANS) in New Delhi, which was one of the first mental health and neurosciences centers to be set up in the private sector in India.
He is an active member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Delhi Neurological Association (DNA), Neuroscientists Association of Eastern India, Neurological Society of India, Indian Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery, and Neurotrauma Society of India.
