Spine Surgery – Fusion and Fixation (Lumber, Cervical)
[Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure which is used to correct problems with the small bones in the spine (vertebrae). It is essentially a “welding” process. The basic idea is to fuse together two or more vertebrae so that they heal into a single, solid bone. This is done to eliminate painful motion or to restore stability to the spine.]
Minimally invasive techniques allow fusions to be performed with smaller incisions.
The right procedure for the patient will depend on the nature and location of your disease.

Day 1
Patient arrives at the airport
Operation team welcomes the patient
Hotel Check-In
Patient meets the concerned doctor according to the time of arrival (same day or the next day)
Day 2
• Patient meets the doctor and gets the evaluations done.
You will need to have a physical to ensure that your heart and lungs are healthy. A blood test, electrocardiogram (EKG), and chest X-ray may be performed.
• Tests like MRI, Blood Investigations etc. done according to the doctor’s prescription.
Day 3
• Patient meets the doctor with reports and plans the surgery accordingly.
• Pre-surgery medications are prescribed and pre anaesthesia check up done.
Day 4
• Reach the hospital 2 hours prior to surgery
• After surgery, the patient is moved into ICU under observation for 24 hours.
• After 24 hours if the patient is stable then shifted to a normal ward/room.
• Following surgery, you will be given pain medications through an IV route. The IV medication will be given
through a PCA (Patient-Controlled Analgesia) pump/infusion pump. This form of medication allows you to
control your own medication for pain.
Other pain killer injections and antibiotics shall also be given as per requirement. Once you are tolerating
clear liquids, your diet will slowly be advanced until you are ready for a regular meal again.
Day 5 -7
• Patient is re-evaluated by the surgeon.
• Physiotherapy and Mobilisation is started as per clinical status of the patient, level of pain and
neurological status. .
• Foley and catheter (Urine pipe) is removed and patients are encouraged to go to the washroom. Diet is
advanced to soft or normal as per the tolerance of the patient.
• Medicines are gradually switched to oral form and movements increased. Normal diet is started.
Day 8
• On case to case basis, discharge may be performed on this day
• Detailed counseling is done about dos and don’ts (to be followed after discharge) and medicines are
explained.
Day 9-20
POST DISCHARGE:
7th/8th day of surgery:
• Patient is re-evaluated after discharge from the hospital
• Wound dressings are done, Physiotherapy is encouraged.
2 weeks of surgery:
- Suture removal is done.
- After the removal of sutures the patient is then allowed to travel back to home country following the
precautions and physiotherapy. - Another small mention is that patients undergoing anterior cervical spine surgery may suffer with
swallowing difficulties for the first 5-7 days and it subsides gradually.
