What is Hematology?

Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) in BLK-Max Hospital

is a medical procedure in which a haematologist replaces the unhealthy bone marrow with healthy bone marrow. It is also called a stem cell transplant. Bone marrow transplant is used to treat blood cancers like Leukemia or Lymphoma, bone marrow diseases like Aplastic anaemia and other immune systems or genetic diseases like Sickle cell anaemia.

Types of Bone Marrow Transplant

Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant: The term auto means self. Patient’s own blood-forming cells are removed from the patient before he/she receives high-dose chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Then these stem cells are stored in a freezer. After high-dose chemotherapy or radiation treatments, they are given back to the patient’s body to make normal blood cells.
Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant: Donor and Recipient are two separate individuals and a transplant is done using the stem cells of the donor. It may be:

Matched Related, where the donor is an HLA matched relative usually a sibling.
Matched Unrelated, where the donor is not a relative of the patient and usually found from one of the various national or international registries.
Partially Matched Related, where the donor is from a patient’s family but partially matched (Haploidentocal)
